Apparatus

Engine 551 was purchased in 2004 to replace our aging 1991 model pumper.  The engine was built in Bradenton, FL by Pierce Manufacturing.  It was designed with safety and efficiency in mind and custom built for the Double Oak Volunteer Fire Dept.  Engine 551 is a 2004 model Pierce Contender Custom Pumper.  It carries 1000 gallons of water inside its onboard water tank.  The pump on the engine is rated at 1,250 gallons per minute.  Engine 551 features seating for up to six firefighters and carries a full complement of firefighting equipment including hose, hand tools, SCBA, vehicle extrication tools, ladders, and more!

The engine is a joy to operate as all functions including pumping water are easy to handle.  E-551 also carries a full stock of medical equipment for medical emergency responses.  Engine 551 also has an onboard generator and lighting system enabling us to provide scene lighting during nighttime incidents as well as provide power to electric tools and equipment.  Several of our members traveled to the Pierce plant in Bradenton, FL for final inspection of E-551 on April 21, 2004. Engine 551 was also featured at the Fire Department Instructors Conference (FDIC) in Indianapolis, IN during the first week of May 2004.  Following the FDIC conference, E-551 was driven back to Double Oak by some of our members and readied for service.  On May 8, 2004 our 1991 model Engine 551 was retired from service with the DOVFD and delivered to the Lake Tanglewood Volunteer Fire Department near Amarillo, TX.  The retired Engine 551 now serves in a front line capacity with their department.  In the meantime, our 2004 Pierce will continue to serve Double Oak well into the future!

Brush/Rescue 551 is a 1997 model Ford F-350 4x4.  It's primary responsibility is to respond to grass and brush fires and is our first out apparatus on all medical emergencies.  It carries a full supply of medical equipment including oxygen, airway supplies, bandaging supplies, backboard, and an AED (Automatic Defibrillator).  Brush 551 also carries wildland firefighting equipment including hose and hand tools.  The pump and part of the bed were replaced in 2006.  The brush truck features an on board water tank holding 250 gallons of water. It also carries a Class A Foam system. The pump on B-551 is an 18hp pump rated at 200 gallons per minute.  It is capable of providing more pressure and volume than the older pump we replaced.  It also operates similar to the pump on Brush 552 for consistency.  An Elkhart Sidewinder Monitor Nozzle was also fitted to Brush 551's bumper.  It is remotely controlled from inside the cab using a joystick and easily allows water to flow on the fire while the vehicle is moving.  Brush 551 has served the DOVFD well responding to hundreds of calls over it's service period.  In 2005, Brush 551 responded mutual aid into Wise County for a 3000 acre grass fire.  During the 2005 wildland fire season Brush 551 saw more firefighting action than in the previous 2-3 years combined!  B-551 continues to serve the DOVFD as a brush unit and a primary responder to medical calls today.

DOVFD Engine 552 is a 2009 1250 gpm pumper with 1000 gallon onboard water tank and 20 gallons of class A foam. This engine replaces our 1999 Spartan pumper. The new E552 is very similar to our E551 in that it has an onboard air compressor that provides "CAFS" or compressed air foam. This is state of the art fire suppression that provides water/foam/air mixture at 5x expansion rate compared to plain water. E2 also has an onboard Honda generator and 3 quartz scene lights, hydraulic "JAWS" rescue tools, multi-gas detector, chain saw and EMS equipment including an defibrillator (AED). In an effort to standardize our fleet, both trucks are set up very similar inside and out. Having 2 engines provides DOVFD a means of one engine attacking a fire and the 2nd engine providing water supply by laying a supply line or shuttling water.  We are also able to assist neighboring communities via mutual aid and still keep an engine co. in town staffed for response. E552 carries 6 firefighters safely in the cab.

Double Oak Brush 552 is a 2009 Ford F550. Brush 552 is our first response EMS rig as well as first out on all brush/grass fires. This project was built "in-house" by members of DOVFD - providing "sweat equity".  Funded in part by CoServ electric coop. The bed and 300 gallon skid unit were funded 3 years ago and installed on a 1990 chassis donated by the Texas Forest Service and Flower Mound FD. In June 2009, CoServe provided an additional grant to purchase the 2009 Ford cab. The extended cab offers additional room for sensitive EMS gear as well as seating for a 3rd firefighter to ride along with gear for all 3 firefighters. The water monitor mounted on the front bumper is controlled from the cab with a joystick, thus firefighters can fight grass fires from the safety of the cab. An 8,000 pound winch is mounted on front but can also be used off the rear of the truck. Recently DOVFD purchased a new Lifepac 1000 AED for this first out medical squad and plans are to add a chain saw for clearing trees from roads.
